Samsung SDI Designates Indiana Plant as ESS Production Hub, Secures Mega-Orders Exceeding 60 GWh, and Begins LFP Mass Production

Against the backdrop of sluggish growth in the electric vehicle (EV) market, Samsung SDI is rapidly shifting its strategic focus toward the high-growth stationary energy storage system (ESS) and AI data center markets. Below is a summary of the company’s latest developments, including major order wins in the U.S., local production expansion, and supply chain restructuring.

1. Strong Financial Performance in Q3 2026

  • Significant Revenue Growth and Profitability: Driven by surging demand for utility-scale ESS and battery backup units (BBUs) for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, Samsung SDI recorded its highest quarterly operating profit in three years.
  • Financial Figures:
    • Total company revenue rose 52.6% year-over-year, while operating profit reached 407.8 billion KRW (approx. 304 million USD), returning to profitability from an operating loss in the same period last year.
    • The Battery Business unit recorded revenue of 4.41 trillion KRW (approx. 3.28 billion USD), up 55.3% year-over-year, and generated an operating profit of 361.9 billion KRW (approx. 269 million USD).

2. Large-Scale U.S. Orders and Production Base Conversion

  • Orders Exceeding 60 GWh: Entering 2026, Samsung SDI secured massive ESS battery orders, primarily in the U.S. market. This includes a 1 GWh supply contract with Alpha Omega Power for the nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA)-based “Samsung Battery Box 1.7” and a cell supply agreement with Sungrow.
  • Line Conversion to LFP: In response to slowing EV demand in the U.S., the company designated its StarPlus Energy (Synergy Cells) plant in Indiana as an ESS production hub. Starting in the fourth quarter, Samsung SDI is accelerating the conversion of manufacturing lines from EV batteries to lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries.

3. Strengthening Supply Chains and Future Outlook

  • Complying with FEOC Rules and Avoiding China Dependence: To meet Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) rules under the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and eliminate dependence on Chinese parts and materials, Samsung SDI signed a long-term supply agreement with a major South Korean materials company for LFP cathode materials. This move aims to comply with strict U.S. regulatory standards and secure local demand.
  • New Products and Expansion Plans: In addition to launching cylindrical LFP cells for data center BBUs, the company aims to secure further long-term supply contracts for large-scale ESS and uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems by the end of the year. Furthermore, Samsung SDI has submitted bids for the South Korean government-led 3rd ESS procurement round, further driving its global and U.S. market share expansion.
