European Commission Selects LFP Battery Factories in Spain and Poland Under 895 Million Euro Cleantech Call

The European Commission has selected 12 projects requesting a total of approximately 895 million euros in grants under the cleantech manufacturing topic of the Innovation Fund call. The selected proposals include lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery factories in Spain and Poland, as well as advanced manufacturing projects for solar cells, hydrogen, and heat pumps.

The exact individual grant amounts will be finalized during the grant agreement negotiations with the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA).

1. Major Battery Projects

The following key battery-related projects have been selected to strengthen Europe’s EV (electric vehicle) supply chain:

  • PowerCo Battery Spain (Sagunto, Valencia, Spain)
    • Project Details: Construction of an LFP battery cell gigafactory for electric vehicles.
    • Scale: Annual production capacity of up to 27 GWh (a modular plant consisting of 2 blocks powered by renewable energy and 8 production lines, manufacturing prismatic cells).
    • Additional Note: Sagunto is the site for PowerCo’s second gigafactory, where plans for up to 40 GWh of annual capacity are also underway on separate lines.
  • LG Energy Solution Wrocław / ArisEU Project (Poland)
    • Project Details: Establishment of an LFP battery cell production line for electric vehicles.
    • Scale: Annual production capacity of 9 GWh.
    • Technical Features: Adopts advanced stacking processes, a proprietary connection system, and accelerated cell formation technology.
  • Robert Bosch / FLOW4EVE Project (Hungary and Romania)
    • Project Details: Industrialization of a modular heat pump integrated into EV battery thermal management systems.
    • Objective: Improve winter driving range by up to 20%. It is also designed to support bidirectional storage applications such as Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) systems.

2. Solar PV, Hydrogen, and Heat Pump Projects

Innovative projects across other cleantech sectors have also been selected throughout Europe:

  • Solar PV: Holosolis’s 5 GW integrated n-type TOPCon cell and module factory in Hambach, France (SOLAR4EU project), and Umicore’s reusable germanium sheet pilot line for high-performance solar cells in Belgium (ReGAIN Pilot project).
  • Hydrogen: Reversible solid oxide cell stack manufacturing by SolydEra in Italy (expanding annual capacity from 8 MW to 50 MW in fuel cell mode, equivalent to 150 MW in electrolysis mode); Reverion’s 8 MWe fuel cell and 24 MWe electrolysis plant in Lingen, Germany; and RWE’s 20 MW renewable hydrogen demonstration plant (HyScore project).
  • Heat Pumps: Manufacturing of rare-earth-free induction motors for heat pumps by CAADEX in Hungary, Orbital Systems in Sweden, and Additive Drives in Germany.

Related Information and Background

  • Importance of LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) Batteries: LFP batteries offer higher safety with a lower risk of thermal runaway compared to traditional NCM (nickel manganese cobalt) batteries, and can be produced using less expensive materials. Domestic LFP production is crucial for Europe to reduce its reliance on China and establish a local, affordable EV battery supply chain.
  • About the EU Innovation Fund: Funded by revenues from the European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), it is one of the world’s largest funding programs for low-carbon technologies, strongly driving the commercialization of innovative decarbonization technologies within Europe.
